Bath

Bath, Somerset

Written in 1791:

It stands in a deep narrow valley, bounded on the north, east, south and southwest by lofty hills, forming a very pleasant natural amphitheatre, and affording the city a double advantage, a barrier against the winds, and fountains of the purest water. This valley runs nearly from northeast to northwest, being incurvated in its centre by the swelling ridge of Lansdown-hill, which is its chief boundary towards the north. On the northwest side it widens, and gradually opens into a plain, divided into rich meads and pastures, and watered by the river Avon,(the Antona of Tacitus) which, leaving the city on its northern banks, hence winds its way to Keynsham, and the port of Bristol.
