How to determine the relationship between a pair of people

  1. In order to be related, the pair must have a common ancestor.
  2. If one of the pair is the child of the common ancestor and the other is not, the relationship will be nephew/niece, great nephew/great niece, great grand nephew/great grand niece, and so on. All relationships where neither of the pair is a child of the common ancestor are cousin types.
  3. The type of cousin between a pair of related people (i.e. first cousin, second cousin, etc.) is determined purely by the relationship of the elder generation of the pair to the common ancestor. The number of “greats” or “grands” in that relationship is the cousin number. So for example, if the relationship is “great grandfather”, the pair will be 2nd cousins.
  4. If the pair are at the same generation level, they will simply be first cousins, second cousins, etc. For each additional generation that the younger generation is “removed” from the elder generation, that person will be that number removed. So one generation later will be “once removed”, two generations later will be “twice removed”, and so on.

Notes

  • Elder generation does not imply elder in age, merely nearer to the common ancestor in terms of generations.
  • Logically, the relationships of great nephew, great niece, great uncle and great aunt should be grand nephew, etc., to align with grandson, etc., but common usage in the UK is to use “great”.
